Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chemistry I; at least Algebra II; teacher recommendation; could be offered to 10th graders with teacher recommendation.
Description: Advanced Placement Chemistry is intended to provide a second level of chemistry comparable to the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. Topics include atomic structure and theory, chemical bonding, states of matter, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, and descriptive chemistry. At least 25% of instructional time is dedicated to hands-on laboratory investigations. Schools could offer this course as a single or a double block class, with extended time for lab inquiry activities. Students enrolled in this course are encouraged to pursue an advanced mathematics sequence. Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement Chemistry examination in May. With a satisfactory score, students may be eligible to receive some credit for college-level chemistry. This course is in compliance with the advanced placement course description of the College Board.

Summer Assignment 2019-20:
Our summer assignment is designed to help you retain your skills from first year chemistry. It is essential that you do not forget the concepts you have learned in first year chemistry as we will be building and directly using the concepts in first year chemistry throughout the AP Chemistry course.
In the second week of the new school year we will assess you on some of these first-year concepts, specifically: the polyatomic ions, element names, element symbols, moles, stoichiometry, molarity and nomenclature. Worksheets with answers have been provided below to give you some practice. None of the work needs to be handed in, it is just provided as practice.

We strongly encourage you to purchase The Princeton Review "Cracking the AP Chemistry Exam 2020 Edition". The standard edition or premium edition will both work. The premium edition provides more practice than the standard version. It appears that the 2020 edition will not be released until around August 6, 2019 so you will likely not be able to order it before then. If you are unable to purchase this book, we do have several copies at school that we can let you borrow for the school year, please see your teacher at the start of the school year.
