Bee in the Know

September 3, 2020

Welcome Parents and Students,

We are looking forward to another great year at Osbourn Park. While this year will look very different than any other school year, in many ways it will be the same. We may not be in the same physical location during the school day, but we will still be engaging in high impact learning activities, rich conversations with classmates and teachers, and opportunities to assess what we know and how we can grow and improve our knowledge. Teachers have been working around the clock for the past weeks to design and develop learning activities that will make our synchronous class time engaging and productive. As we get started, we want everyone to approach this school year with a growth mindset. That includes students who will be learning in a different manner than before, teachers who will be guiding and instructing students from a distance, and parents who will be supporting students at home. No one will be an expert on day one. We are all on this journey together.

Online Instruction – What do we need to know?

Students will receive their schedule on September 4th and teachers will be publishing their canvas course on the same day. Students will enter their virtual classes by logging into Office 365 with their PWCS user name ( and password.  To get to Canvas, students will click on the ‘waffle” in the upper left corner, click ‘all apps,” and then “Canvas.”  To make sure that you are ready for day one, follow the five steps in the OPHS Student Checklist that our ITC, Mrs. Buggio, has included on the OPHS webpage.

If you have any technology questions, you can:

Visit the website created by PWCS ITCs to help students and parents with the transition to remote learning.
Contact the IT help desk by calling 703.791.8826 or emailing
Use reset your password if needed.

All the materials that are usually sent home on the first day of school will be included in the Return to Learn Packet available in ParentVUE. Please make sure to complete the Return to Learn Packet by Friday, September 18. If you have questions about your ParentVue account or are having issues accessing your account, please call the school and one of our office staff can help.

OPHS-Student 2020_21 Canvas Course

All students should have access to the OPHS-Student 2020_21 Canvas Course. This will be your go-to for any information you might need, including helpful tips for Canvas and Zoom, password reset help, and links to the Code of Behavior and Student Handbook. Keep checking this course as we will be adding new information and resources throughout the year.

Material Distribution and Additional Laptop Distribution Dates

OPHS will be hosting material distribution days on Thursday and Friday (September 10 and 11). On these days, students will be able to “drive-through” to pick up textbooks and supplies that they may need for certain courses. Be on the lookout for additional details. Teachers will be sending out information if there are materials to pick up.

If you have indicated that your student needs a device but have been unable to attend one of our device pick-up days, be on the lookout for details on how and when you can come pick up a device for your student. We will be hosting additional device distribution days after the start to the school year.

In preparation for a potential return to face-to-face learning, we ask that all students who qualify complete the form in advance. You can find the free and reduced lunch form as well as other information on PWCS food and nutrition services.

Good News! Check out our students who are competing at a national level!

For the past couple months, under the guidance of Dr. Psaker at the Governor's School, a few OPHS students have been participating in a STEM competition hosted by NASA and Texas Instruments. The competition, TI Codes, tasked Ashish Pothireddy, Anish Pothireddy, Samyak Thapa, Vishnu Lakshmanan, and Santiago Campos-Merida with innovating a process to be used on the International Space Station. The team developed a module that could sanitize the air and surfaces with UV light and their module has advanced to the final phase of the competition, making them one of the top 10 teams in the nation. A public vote determines who wins the top 5 positions (all of whom win a win a fully sponsored trip to NASA headquarters in Houston with the top three and grand prize winning additional awards). The vote is open through September 15th.

Congratulations to Ashish, Anish, Vishnu, Sam, and Santi. Please go vote for their submission! Their team name is “Blinding Lights” and their video is titled “2020 NASA & TI Codes Contest: Blinding Lights.”
