Bee in the Know

Week of November 22, 2020

We’re now a couple of weeks into the second quarter of the school year. While observing Zoom classes, OPHS administrators have been impressed by the high level of student participation as well as high quality instruction. I am encouraged by the hard work our students and staff continue to put into making learning and teaching in the virtual environment as successful as possible! As we start a short week and then break to take some time off with family, I hope each of our OP community members are able to find ways to give thanks and enjoy the time spent with loved ones. When we return from break, it’s just three short weeks until the winter break. Let’s use this time to stay up to date on assignments and practice good attendance.

REMINDERS!

  • Tuesday, November 24 is a GOLD day.
  •  OPHS will be closed with no school for students November 25-27 for Thanksgiving Break.

Youth Salute Finalists

Prince William County Council on Youth Leadership sponsors the “Youth Salute” in cooperation with the National Council on Youth Leadership. The purpose of this program is to honor Prince William County high school students in the community who maintain a high scholastic average and have demonstrated leadership ability. The “Youth Salute” has been an approved program by the National Association of Secondary School Principals for over 35 years. The ten finalists were selected based on their resumes and two essays on topics such as leadership and personal accomplishments.

Please help us congratulate our Prince William County Council on Youth Leadership students for the 2020 year. Of our 12 students who submitted essays and resumes, 2 were honored. Senior Andrea Rhee was awarded 2nd runner-up this year. Andrea has been awarded a scholarship, plaque, and medal for her outstanding leadership in Prince William County. Also, senior Anya Mansur was one of the 6 other finalists recognized as well. We are so proud! Congratulations to all 2020 Youth Salute Nominees!

What’s Good: Good News in the Virtual Learning Environment

“In World History II students participated in a Socratic Seminar on Padlet about cultural diffusion and Eastern Empires. In the before times, this would have been done verbally but the students are really enjoying the ability to see their posts appear in real time along with replies from other students. It allows students who are normally shy about participating in class to have a new avenue to get involved in the conversation. Students were engaged during the entire class answering each other's questions and sharing their ideas about culture, how it is passed down, how interactions with other empires impacted culture, and making connection to today's world.”

"The OPHS Girl Up Club kicked off our first project of the year, 'Letters to Community Members'. Each club member will choose someone to write to in the community, offering positive words of encouragement during these challenging times. Our letters will be sent to local seniors in nursing homes, patients battling COVID in our surrounding hospitals, and more. I was truly inspired by their ideas and look forward to spreading positivity throughout our community. If this project piques your interest and you would like to know more about what we do, please contact Ms. Keener for more information about the OPHS Girl Up Club."
