Week of September 12, 2021

It was a short but productive week back in the halls of OPHS. In Social Studies this week, students settled right back into their school routines and had a great week creating memes about events in World History and an incredibly rich socratic seminar on World Religions and Trade. Routines, organization, and goal setting are a great way for students to set themselves for success. At the start of the school year, we encourage all students to find habits and routines that work for them. Rest and get a snack, then spend some time studying or practicing a new skill you learned in school that day. Start setting yourself up now, for a smooth and successful year. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your School Counselor, Teacher, or Assistant Principal if you’d like some help with setting up some healthy study habits!

 

New School Year Packet-Must be completed

All “first day” forms are now online in ParentVue. All families should complete the New School Year Packet as soon as possible, but no later than Friday, September 17, 2021. The information you provide will allow school staff to ensure the safety of your student this school year. Directions are as follows:

  1. Log in to ParentVue app or website using your ParentVue user ID and password.
  2. Once logged in, click the “Online Records” button at the top of the screen.
  3. If you need assistance, or do not have an active ParentVue account please contact your student’s alpha secretary.

 

Early Release Procedures

Parents, if you need to have your student released early during the school day, please send in a signed note, or call your student's alpha secretary to verify the dismissal. Please do not enter these into the Hub as they are causing an attendance error that counts the student absent all day. If you ever have any attendance related questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your student's alpha secretary. (Check out the helpful guide at the bottom of the Bee in the Know!)

 

Principal Advisory Committee (PAC)

The first meeting of 2021-22 will be held on Monday, September 13th at 5:00 pm via Zoom.  If you are interested in attending, please email Marie Emery at Emeryms@pwcs.edu for details.

 

Biotech Hours

All students in the Biotech and Engineering program are required to earn 100 service hours by May 1, of their senior year. Students have many different opportunities, both in person, virtual, and from the comfort of their own homes to earn hours. Students will use the Biotech Hours Submission Form to submit their hours and reflections. Students should regularly visit the Biotech Hours Opportunities page for updated opportunities and all information needed to submit hours correctly.

 

Activity Buses

Our Activity Buses started on Thursday, 9/9 and will continue to run every Tuesday and Thursday for the remainder of the school year. Activity Bus stops can be found on the Osbourn Park School Webpage and they have been emailed out through our Student Canvas page. Keep in mind that Activity Bus stops are express stops and will not be able to drop students off at your normal AM or PM bus stops. We are fortunate to have an Activity Bus that stops at Gar-Field HS to support the large number of transfer students who come from the Eastern Side of the county.

Please remind your student that in order to ride the Activity Bus, they must be with a teacher, coach, or club sponsor by 2:25, no exceptions. Once they leave their activity, the teacher, coach, or sponsor will write them a pass and the student must report to the first-floor cafeteria within 10 minutes of receiving that pass. Students will remain in the first-floor cafeteria with our Activity Bus supervisors until the buses arrive at 4:45.

 

Upcoming College Fairs

High school students are invited to explore college options at two upcoming fairs.

  • Monday, September 27 6-8 p.m. Woodbridge High School
  • Tuesday, October 19 6-8 p.m. Charles J. Colgan High School

High school students and their parents can visit the College and Career Planning Webpage to find information about the fall college fairs, as well as financial aid nights, transcript requests, and other resources to assist with planning for post-graduation education.

 

Fredericksburg Independent Book Festival

Students and families are welcome to come out to the Riverfront Park in Fredericksburg, VA, on October 4, from 10am to 4pm. The festival brings readers and writers together and promotes independent authors. Our very own Language Arts teacher, Mr. James Noll, runs the event and will be releasing his new novel on October 26!

 

Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert!

Congratulations to Ms. Marlowe, Language Arts teacher at OP, for being named one of the 2021-22 Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts! Ms. Marlowe has earned this award by being a leader in digital transformation in education. Way to make us OP Proud!

 

School Laptop Corner

Insurance for School Devices – We are strongly encouraging families to purchase the optional device insurance that is available. If your student’s laptop is damaged and needs to be returned, the cost for a replacement or for repairs will be due from the parent before a new laptop is provided. Optional digital device insurance can be found at the device insurance website.

Student Laptop Updates – Students should make sure to update their laptops. This is best done at home as it can take an hour or more the first time the computer is updated. Connect to your home WiFi and then follow the steps below:

  1. Press the Windows key on your keyboard or click on the Magnifying glass in the bottom left corner of your desktop screen.
  2. Type “Check for updates” and press enter.
    • A new window will pop up
  3. Select “Check online for updates from Microsoft Update
    • **IMPORTANT Do NOT select the “Check for Updates” grey rectangle!
  4. Updates will automatically begin to install. Do not turn off the computer or disconnect from the internet until updates are complete.

Laptop Power Up and/or Down Issue - If your student device seems to have issues turning on, or will not fully power down, check out these student instructions.  If this solution does not work for your student, send them to the main office.

Laptop Repair at School - Students in need of laptop service or repairs should follow the procedures outlined below.

  1. Students fill-out the OPHS Laptop Service and Repair Form (available in your room or  the front office).
  2. Students drop off their completed form, laptop (if applicable) to the MAIN OFFICE.
  3. Students will be contacted by the front office when:
    • Their laptop is ready to pick up.
    • It has been determined they must make payment for repairs before they are issued another laptop.

 

Free and Reduced Lunch Form

While breakfast and lunch are being provided free of charge to all students this year, we are still asking that families complete the free and reduced lunch form if you have qualified for free and reduced lunch in the past or if you feel that you may qualify for it this year. The form can be found at www.pwcsnutrition.com.

This form is important because it can determine a family’s eligibility for things like: discounted school fees, free or reduced internet services, and/or discounted phone service. Completion of the form also ensure that Osbourn Park receives the appropriate funding to support all of our students.

 

Senior Portrait Make-Up Dates

The last Senior Portrait Make-up dates are scheduled for October 11 and 12, after school Seniors can schedule their appointment online at www.prestigeportraits.com.

 

Underclassmen Photos

All underclassmen (9th, 10th, and 11th grade), will have their pictures taken on September 30, and October 1. The make-up date will be November 16. Pictures will be taken through students Language Arts classes.

 

Student Services Social/Emotional Well-Being Survey

A message from Student Services – We recognize that the past year has brought some challenges to our PWCS families. This school year, you will hear messages about addressing unfinished learning and ensuring both physical and mental wellness for all students and staff members. Our school based mental health professionals stand ready and are committed to supporting your student(s) as they continue their educational journey. To help us be prepared to support our students, we are asking parents/guardians to share information with us via a survey about your student’s social and emotional needs. The survey will close on September 17, 2021, so please be sure to respond before that time.

We know this may be a time of new or renewed fear and anxiety for many and we recognize that additional support will be needed to remove barriers that impede learning.

At the start of this school year, students will also be given an opportunity to complete a brief emotional needs assessment. The data from this assessment and the data you provide as a parent/guardian will allow us to offer targeted support to students in need. This survey will be given during the first few weeks of school If you wish to review the questions for the student survey, please visit this webpage.

New Yellow Jacket Spotlight!

Mary Martin – Art Teacher: Ms. Martin graduated from IUP (Indiana University of PA) for her undergrad (art education) and Grand Canyon University for her grad program (special education). This is Ms. Martin's 17th year of teaching art. She has taught at all levels, K-12 and even adults. She lives in Gainesville with her husband and 2 boys (ages 10 and7) and yellow lab, Delilah. She is an avid runner, loves to play soccer, and golf with her family when time allows. Ms. Martin also loves to do all types of art and listen to all types of music.

Ashley Runion – Science Teacher: Ms. Runion is an Osbourn Park alumna who graduated in 2011. She attended Bridgewater College where she studied Chemistry and education. While at Bridgewater she played on the softball team in addition to her studies. Prior to returning to OP Ms. Runion taught Chemistry and Forensics at Woodbridge High School. She was married this past summer and is so excited to be back at OP.

Mario Moreno – Gifted Teacher: Mr. Moreno is joining our Gifted Education department this year. He has been a Science teacher for 15 years, most recently at Forest Park High School. Mr. Moreno brings a tremendous amount of energy and excited to the Gifted Ed department and to Osbourn Park. In addition to his work in the classroom, Mr. Moreno is one of our National Honor Society sponsors and our Scholastic Bowl Sponsor.

Athletics

The September Athletic Booster Club meeting will be Monday, September 13 at 7 PM in room 1058. 

Help support Boys Basketball and stop by Chipotle on Liberia Tuesday, 9/14 between 4 and 8 PM. 20% of the proceeds will be donated back to the OPHS Boys Basketball program.  

We are looking for volunteers to help with the first Varsity Home football game of the season. If interested please email ophs.abc.jackets@gmail.com.
