Week of February 14, 2021

We are excited to soon welcome students back into the building and begin hybrid learning. Next week, we will share our bell schedule and some of the mitigations we have put into place to keep our in-person students and staff safe. A few points to share today:

The bell schedule for ALL learners will change to a 7:30 am start time. This start will be the same for either in person or virtual students. It is recommended to start getting students used to waking up a bit earlier. Research says that we do our best when we have a consistent sleep schedule. So, with that in mind, I would recommend that students begin to adjust alarm clocks so that when first period starts at 7:30, they will be adjusted to the new start time.

Secondly, if your student is planning on coming back to school and has not been issued a school laptop, we encourage you to complete the loaner agreement (below) and plan to pick up the lap top next week. This will be a huge help to us! Yes, your student can use their own device, but we do not encourage it. We can only provide tech support to school issued devices and the school is not responsible for lost or stolen personal devices.

 

Device Distribution

As we prepare for in person learning, we would like to complete our device distribution to students who do not currently have a PWCS loaner device. Each student will be required to bring their device to/from school each day. While we do not mind the use of a personal device, it is highly recommended that you use a PWCS device. County devices have been set up with all software needed to access any school related website/application. We are also unable to troubleshoot personal devices.

To obtain a PWCS device, please use the link below to complete our electronic loaner agreement form. Once this form is submitted, you may pick the device up at door #1 anytime between 8:00-4:00, Monday through Friday. We strongly encourage the device to be picked up prior to the 1st day of in person learning, however, if it is not picked up, we will have the device available that day provided we have a loaner agreement form on file.

Math Homework Hotline

The Osbourn Park Mathematics Department is excited to announce a new opportunity for your student to receive additional assistance in their math course!

We have opened a Homework Hotline for students. This is a chance for students to log into a virtual zoom session and ask for help on a particular problem they are struggling with. While this is not a replacement for class instruction, it is a great chance to get immediate feedback and assistance one on one for an individual problem.

To attend, simply log on to the OP Math Homework Hotline during one of the times listed below.

  • Tuesday Evening (5:00pm-7:00pm)
  • Thursday Evening (5:00pm-7:00pm)

Students will be assisted in the order they enter the zoom waiting room and wait times will be determined by the number of students who attend.

English GRO

Need help with your English class? Not sure how to do some things with Canvas and could use a few tips? Are your grades not where they should be because you're struggling with time management and organization skills during virtual learning? We're here to help! SAT/ACT

Osbourn Park will be hosting the SAT and ACT through July 2021.

  • SAT: March 13; May 8; June 5
  • ACT: April 17; June 12; July 17

Testing dates after July 2021 are not yet available but will be posted when they become available. Students are still able to search on the College Board or ACT website for other schools that host testing in the county, as well as outside of the county. You may use the links below to search for any testing center in the state of Virginia.

Black History Month Celebration Continues!

February is Black History Month! The celebration continues with an offering of a number of presentations every Monday of February through our Canvas platform. Our OPHS students have developed a wonderful repertoire of impactful and historical video montages that look at time periods and individuals, past and present, who have contributed to society. Week one looked at The Harlem Renaissance and you will be thrilled with the upcoming presentations! Please see the link to the Canvas page below:

Library News

The OPHS library is challenging the student and staff body to read 2,000 books between Jan 1 and April 15th. If OPHS meets that challenge, Dr. Walts and Mrs. Kane as well as other teachers will battle out a “Taste Buds” Challenge. Once a book has been read, fill out this form or go to the OPHS Library Canvas course to log in your information (enroll with this code: https://pwcs.instructure.com/enroll/GER7YG if you haven’t already). Books do not have to be from the OPHS library, although we would love to check them out to you, which can be done from the OP library canvas course.

Congratulations to our Girls Basketball Team for winning the Regional Championship!

It was a hard-fought game against Colgan HS in the regional final that saw the two teams trade 1 point leads for most of the second half. In the end it game down to a final defensive play to seal the victory, 50-49. Both teams played great and both teams demonstrated great sportsmanship. Good luck to our Lady Yellowjackets as they move on to States!

 

 

And finally, 9 Ways to De-stress!

As you know this year has been quite stressful and sometimes, we need a reminder on how to reduce the stress in our lives. Check out these 9 ways to de-stress and relax!

1. A varied and healthy diet

Eating fresh ingredients and lots of fruit is important. Juices filled with vitamin C, such as orange or grapefruit juice, are said to be good for your immune system and can help with stress. When you're busy and tired it can be tempting just to grab another pizza or ready meal but cooking from scratch can be therapeutic as well as being healthier.

2. Exercise

Doing a sport at least once a week is the best way to reduce stress. It helps your body produce endorphins, which make you feel good. Even daily walks of 30 minutes can help reduce stress levels but it's even better to work out intensively. Even if you don't feel like it at the time you will feel the benefits afterwards.

3. Meditation

It might sound simple but sitting quietly for 10 minutes a day can really help with stress levels. If you've never tried meditation before, it's worth a go. Good breathing techniques can put you in a more relaxed state as they send oxygen surging through your bloodstream, helping to calm you down and beat the stress.

4. Take breaks regularly

Short breaks between working can help you switch off. But longer breaks are important too. How about taking the weekend off to relax? You'll hopefully come back to your work feeling fresh.

5. Play with your pet

It is said that spending time with animals is good for your health. If you pat a dog for a couple of minutes, your body releases hormones that make you feel happy and can decrease the amount of stress in your system.

6. Sleep

Sleep is always the best medicine and some people find that small 20-minute naps can help increase productivity.

7. Try to see the positive side

If you missed a deadline, try to appreciate what you learned from this mistake: now you know how to plan ahead. Things might seem bad, but if you try, there is usually something positive to be learned.

8. Listen to music

Listening to music can help calm you down and put you in a better frame of mind. If you're feeling stressed, putting on some calming music while you work could really help.

9. Laugh

They say that laughter is the best medicine, and it's true. Laughing out loud increases oxygen and blood flow which automatically reduces stress.
