September 4th, 2022

We would like to welcome everyone back to school and extend a special welcome to all our new students and families. We are so excited to see all the students’ faces and to see them getting into their routines for the 2022-2023 school year.

We recently welcomed families to our annual Back to School Night where families could meet teachers and learn about the school and all the extracurricular activities we have to offer at OP. If you were not able to attend, our next opportunity to connect with teachers will be at our Touch Base event on Monday, October 10th. More information will follow about that event.

Students have been offered portrait package forms in their English classes that includes options to prepay in advance using a QR code or by going to the Candid Color web site at www.candidcolor.net. Students can also bring cash or a check payable to "Candid Color" with their order form the day of their picture. There will be make-up days for those who are out of school the days we take photos, so stay tuned for make-up info in a future Bee-in-the-Know. Any questions, please contact Mr. Barber, our yearbook advisor, at Barberds@pwcs.edu.

Back to School Packet

All families should complete the Back to School Packet no later than Friday, September 16, 2022. The information you provide will allow school staff to ensure the safety of your student this school year.

To access the Back to School Packet:

WiFi Access

All PWCS devices automatically will connect to the PWCS-Int network when they are within range of access points at any PWCS school. Students should be able to access PWCS-Int WiFi network signals from the parking lot of any PWCS school if they do not have internet access at home.

Students using personal computers can access WiFi inside and in the vicinity of PWCS schools using the Guest-Access Network, and password: FourMyd3v!ces. Students will be prompted to enter their PWCS email address and password to access the internet on this network.

Students that do not have WiFi access at home can inquire about borrowing a WiFi hotspot from the school, by speaking the school’s Technology Support Specialist (TSSPEC) or Instructional Technology Coach (ITC).

Student handbook and Classroom procedures

Parents and students are encouraged to read our OPHS student handbook to learn about all our school expectations for students. Our school practices, along with the PWCS Code of Behavior, will be reviewed with students during the first week of school. Please click on our Student Handbook.pdf for further review.

To learn about individual classroom practices, students and guardians should read the syllabi for each class. The syllabus will contain course information including grading practices, late work policies, etc.

Updated Procedures for Student Tardiness

Getting to school on time is very important to the educational success of our students.  In the past years, we have had an increased number of student drivers with an excessive amount of unexcused 1st period tardies.  Each student who drives to school signs a parking agreement.  Please see the updated tardy procedures in the student handbook via canvas for more information.

School hours and After School Activities

OPHS is open to students from 7 am to 3:30 pm each day. To ensure all students are safely supervised, students cannot stay in the cafeteria and wait for rides. Unless the student is being supervised with a parent, teacher, or coach, the student must leave campus.

Students who stay after school must make arrangements to be picked up soon after the ending of the activity/sport. Students who are not picked up within the hour of the event ending may lose privileges to participate in future practices and activities. To support student participation, we will offer four activity buses on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school beginning on Thursday, September 8th. These buses do not stop at all bus stops, but they do have drop off points around the county.

All students staying after school must do so under the supervision of a teacher, sponsor, or coach. Also, students who stay after school, leave campus, and then return to catch the bus will lose activity bus privileges.

Students who participate in clubs, activities and sports must conduct themselves in a manner that does not tarnish the image of OPHS.

Transportation

You are encouraged to download the Here Comes the Bus mobile app which allows you to track your student's buses in real-time.

Activity buses begin Thursday, September 8.  Bus information will be coming out this week.

Outside Food/drinks

Students cannot use mobile ordering to have food delivered. All orders delivered to school will be discarded with no reimbursement to the student.

Reminder-Student drop off and pick up

Between the hours of 6:45 am -7:30 am and 2:00 pm and 2:40 pm, student drop off and pick up procedures go into effect. Drop off occurs only on the Auditorium side of the building. Parents should enter school grounds using the bus entrance, merge right, and follow the arrows around to the side of the building to drop the student off in the designate area. The parent drop off is designed to allow parents to drop off/pick up students with minimal disruption to the student drivers and the buses exiting the premises. Dropping off and picking up students in front of the school in the “senior/blue” lot or on Liberia Avenue is prohibited.

Free and Reduced Lunch

Meals are available for free for eligible students in Prince William County Public Schools. In order to receive these benefits, you must apply for meal assistance every year. Applications filed last year are only good for the first few days of school. Children from households that meet Federal Income Guidelines are eligible for free meals. The fastest way to apply for free meal benefits for your child is to apply online at http://pwcsnutrition.com/. Online applications are typically processed within 48 hours of submission. You can access more information about PWCS Menus.pdf here.

Paper-24/7 Tutoring

Paper is a secure, online tutoring service that provides students with unlimited, 24/7 academic support. Whether they’re stuck on homework, studying for a test, or need someone to read and make suggestions to their essays, there will always be experts available online to assist students in over 200 subjects and more than 4 languages.

Paper tutors have been specially trained to conduct expert, academic support in a secure, chat-based platform. With a commitment to helping students learn, they’ll never give students answers, but rather interact with them in an encouraging tone to lead them forward.

This is a free service that the county is providing, so students are encouraged to use it as much as they need, whenever they need. Our teachers also have accounts and will be able to review all student activity to see what they’re working on and provide more targeted instruction as needed.

If you’d like to learn more about Paper you can sign up for a Paper hosted Parent Info Session, available in both English and Spanish. Or if you’d like to speak to a member of the Paper team directly, you can reach them at parents@paper.co.

To see Paper and the help it offers firsthand, we encourage you to login with your students. To get started, see the PWCS Paper Flyer_English.pdf or PWCS Paper Flyer_Spanish.pdf

Here are just a few things we have heard back from Paper about our OP students:

  • A student told their French tutor on Monday night "You're the best tutor!"
  • After two hours of discussing and writing about feudalism, another student told their History tutor "You were a massive help today. I'm sure I'll be coming on Paper a lot more often."
  • One student worked with a Physics tutor for 4 hours.
  • "In the review center, we've enjoyed annotating everything from college essay submissions to the "State of Nature" with tutors celebrating how great of writers our early submitters are and how much we've enjoyed working with the students."

Get involved!

We not only encourage student participation in our school community, but we also want your help as well! Please be on the lookout for information about our Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), our Principal’s Advisory Council (PAC), or one of our Booster Associations (Athletics, Band). Many hands make light work and the more help we have, the more we can offer our students!

Finally, we will continue to publish our “Bee in the Know” newsletters each week. These emails get sent out each Sunday, and contain upcoming information, good news, and updates! Keep a look out!

September 12th, 2022

The start of this school year has been energized by the enthusiasm of our students. Students are encouraged to stay focused, attentive in their classes, and be conscientious of their attendance as we enter the fourth week of classes. We really appreciate all that our students, parents, teachers, and staff are doing to make this an awesome school year. This past Friday morning, our seniors participated in the Senior Sunrise with donuts and time with their classmates. The sunrise was beautiful!

On Friday morning, we also reflected on the tragic events of September 11th with a ceremony by NJROTC and our choir group, the Madigrals.  We thank Commander Ogawa and Mr. Izzo for the meaningful tribute.

September 19th, 2022

Week of September 18, 2022

It is hard to believe we are almost halfway through the first quarter. Kudos to everyone: students, parents, faculty and staff, for making this a smooth start to the 2022-23 school year here at OP! There is a plethora of supports available to students who need help in their classes, but communication is key. Please advise your student to communicate with their teachers if they need help, to stay after school for more individualized assistance from their teachers (activity buses are available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon) and/or students can access the newest 24/7 tutoring assistance program called Paper. This service is provided for every PWCS student and also includes writing assistance. For example, students can upload an essay into the program and within 24 hours they will receive an annotated version of their paper with suggestions about how to make the essay better. The program is housed in Canvas under the Clever app and is available right now for every student. As you can see, there are a number of supports in place for students, so please take advantage of them.

Athletic Hall of Fame

We are looking forward to the 2022 Induction Ceremony for the OPHS Athletic Hall of Fame!  The Induction Ceremony will take place on Thursday 10/13 at 5:30 pm at the Old Hickory Golf Course in Woodbridge.  Tickets are on sale now!  Use the following link to purchase your tickets.  Seats are limited!

Hispanic Heritage Month Starts September 15

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30-day period.

Security Officer Appreciation Week September 19- 23

We thank all our security staff for their unwavering dedication to protecting our students, staff, and citizens. They are highly trained personnel who deter crime, lead evacuations, work closely with local law enforcement, assist in inspections, patrol their schools, and are constantly vigilant in their efforts to keep our staff and students safe.

We thank our very own Mr. Hyman, Mr. Marzett, Mr. Dudley, Ms. Atwood and Officer Johnston for their dedicated work at OP!  Please join us by thanking them as you pass them in the hallways this week.

Yearbook Camp was a Success!

OP's Hi-Jacket yearbook leadership went on a field trip to Germanna Community College in Culpeper, VA for a one-day Walsworth yearbook workshop. The team learned valuable tips from experts on design, photography, and interviewing. Here are a couple pictures from the event:

Speaking of the yearbook, our theme for this year's book is "Life in the Hive" with the catch phrase "Sting Like a Jacket!" Improvements for 2023 include a new spring sports & prom supplement, 100% sports/club/activity coverage, and more copies (we sold out last year).

Yearbook pre-sales will start in the coming weeks with a deep discount! Check Bee-in-the-know for details soon!!!

What’s New in Health and Physical Education?

The HPE Department will be holding a 90-minute parent/guardian and teen driver education meeting on September 27th at 7pm in the auditorium. There is no admittance after 7pm, so please be on time.

Performing Arts – Upcoming Events

Senior and Underclassmen Makeup Picture Day - November 3

Underclassmen pictures will be taken from 7:30 – 9:30 am on Thursday, November 3rd in room 2A and through English classes. Only students who were absent or have issues with the pictures they took in September may take these make ups. Please remember that there should be something noticeably wrong with the picture for it to be allowed to retake, for example the student’s eyes were closed and if a package was purchased, it should be returned.

Senior makeups will also be on November 3rd but will take place from 1 pm to 4 pm. Seniors who would like their pictures published in the yearbook MUST have their pictures taken at this time or they risk the chance of not having their senior picture in the 2023 yearbook due to deadlines for publishing. If you have not taken a senior picture, please sign up to take yours when the sign-up times are available. (Another communication will be sent to seniors when scheduling pictures will be available by Candid Color Photography.)

News from the Tech Help Desk

Just a few tips from the help desk-

  • Make sure that work is saved and downloaded on OneDrive rather than the computer. Space is limited on your computer, and if anything happens to the computer, you will still have access to your work.
  • Make sure you update your computer once a week. Update Student Laptop.pdf  You may need to restart your computer when prompted if you have not updated in a while.
  • Please consider getting insurance in case of accidental damage to the computer.

Only students who were absent or have issues with the pictures they took in September may take these make ups. College and Career Counseling News

College Application Help Sessions

A College Application Help Session will be held on Friday, September 30 during lunches.  Students will have an opportunity to work on college applications, scholarships, resumes, college essays, Naviance, or anything the student needs assistance with.  These sessions will be "Brown Bag Lunch" style where students will bring their lunch to school or purchase a to-go tray lunch from the cafeteria that day and eat in the Career Center during their 25-minute lunch block.

Additional sessions will be held on October 13, October 27, November 17, November 29, and December 8 during lunches and after school from 2:10 pm - 3:00 pm.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Current Grade Point Average (GPA), as of September 2022 is now available in Naviance. You can find your GPA under the About Me tab (top right of the home screen) and click on My Account from the drop down.  Your GPA will appear under the Academic section.

SAT/ACT Opt Out Form

The Virginia Department of Education “Regulations Governing Secondary School Transcripts” mandates that local divisions include a student’s test record, to include at least the highest score earned on college performance-related standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT on the student’s secondary school transcript. Parents, guardians, or others having legal control or charge of a child may elect in writing to have their child’s test record excluded from the student transcript (opt-out).

It is important for parents to understand that it is the expectation of four-year colleges, which require an SAT or ACT score for admission, that the test score is sent to the college directly from the testing agency (College Board or ACT). The score which appears on the transcript is for informational purposes only and does not serve as the “official” score for college admissions purposes.

If you do not want your child’s college performance-related standardized test scores such as the SAT and ACT to be included on his/her official secondary school transcript, please submit theACT/SAT Opt-Out Form (PDF) to your child’s school counseling department.  You do not need to submit an opt-out form if you wish to include your child’s college admission test record on his/her secondary school transcript. You can contact your child’s school counselor for more information regarding this option.

Parents can download this form and submit it to the school counseling office if they wish for college entrance testing scores to not appear on the student transcript.

Full information can be found HERE

Do you know where your food waste goes?

This week Mrs. Mullins' & Ms. Stouffer's Nutrition & Wellness classes found out!  Aleta Daniels, PWCS Sustainability Coordinator, and Melinda Landry, PWCS Environmental Literacy Coordinator, came to guest speak about food waste, recycling, the landfill and what we can do to create a more sustainable future!  If we all become educated on recycling and actually start recycling, we could extend the life of it. This is important because it would cost taxpayers over $2 billion, and we would have to find hundreds of acres of land in an already overcrowded county, if we have to build another one (at the rate we are going, our current landfill only has about 18 years left).

By the way, did you know the PWC landfill is about 388 acres , and has an eco-park with protected wildlife habitats and athletic fields for youth community sports?  It even has a "waste-to-energy" system that converts food waste into energy to power the electricity and heat for the animal shelter as well as about 400 nearby homes!   See all the good our landfill in PWC is doing?  In fact, it is the ONLY landfill in Virginia with an "Exemplary Environmental Expert Participant Rating" (an E-4 rating), the highest rating available for a landfill.  These classes are starting an initiative at OPHS to reduce food waste, so look out for more info in next week's Bee in the Know
