Congratulations to our World Languages Department Chair and Spanish teacher, Todd Robbins! Mr. Robbins has been chosen as a finalist for the 2022 Teacher of the Year Award! Mr. Robbins will be honored later this month for his outstanding work as an educator, leader, and colleague. Congratulations, Mr. Robbins!

Congratulations as well to our Performing Arts Department as OPHS has been awarded the Virginia Music Educators Association's Blue Ribbon Award for the 2021-22 school year! This prestigious honor is awarded based upon superior performances at District in Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Way to Go!

As Teacher Appreciation Week winds down, I wish to thank our amazing teachers for their dedication to our school and students. It is an honor to work at OP with these dedicated and enthusiastic educators!! Thank you to our PTSO for the delicious Nacho Bar they provided this week! What a great treat!

Please review all the important updates as we head into graduation, testing and the close of the school year. We hope everyone has a great week! SOL testing begins this week. Please check the testing calendar on the OPHS website for more details. Students need to make sure that they bring their school issued laptop, fully charged and updated each day of testing.

 

ATTN: Seniors!!

Scholarship Survey

We are asking all students who have been offered a scholarship - whether they are accepting it or not - to fill out the Scholarship Survey . You will be able to indicate whether or not you'd like to be recognized for the scholarship in our Senior Awards Ceremony. ALL scholarships are to be documented. Loans and FAFSA are not included for this survey. If you need help with uploading your scholarships, Mrs. Jaeger will be offering the following help sessions:

  • May 18th - May 20th in the 1st floor Cafeteria Lobby
  • May 10th, 12th, 17th, 19th, 23rd in the 1st floor Cafeteria after school

 

Senior Awards Ceremony

We will have a Senior Awards Ceremony on June 2nd at 6pm in the Lilian Orlich Auditorium. We will recognize seniors who have earned scholarships, military appointments, national, state and regional awards. If you are being acknowledged for an award or scholarship, you will receive an invitation to attend this event. If you wish to be recognized for a scholarship award you have received, you MUST fill out the Scholarship Survey by May 25th at the latest!

 

It's So Sweet to be Summa!

On June 7, after exam dismissal, we will honor our Seniors who earned Summa Cum Laude honors! These impressive seniors who earned a 4.0 or above will be invited for lunch and sweet treats! They will get their Summa medal to wear at graduation at this time.

 

Senior Items

Yard signs and graduation cap and gowns were distributed on May 5. If your senior did not get their items, they may pick them up at OPHS on May 17.

 

CTE & Military Signing Day

Congrats on your upcoming graduation from Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS). If you have obtained full-time employment or have committed to military service, please complete this survey. PWCS would like to recognize and celebrate your accomplishments at the 2022 PWCS Signing Day. This event is similar to athletes signing letters of intent. This event will be held on May 25 at 5 p.m. at the Kelly Leadership Center (14715 Bristow Road, Manassas, Virginia 20112). Light refreshments will be provided. Questions? Final Transcripts

Friday, June 10th, Senior GPAs will be pulled and scheduled to upload that night into Naviance. Once approved by Central Office, final transcripts will be sent the following week by counselors.

Final Transcripts will be sent based on the Senior Survey that is to be completed in Naviance. Counselors will be working on the survey with Seniors through Government classes the week of May 23rd - 27th. If you wish to complete the survey now, please follow the instructions below. This survey can ONLY be filled out ONCE and cannot be altered unless you notify Mrs. Jaeger. For students who are not in government, are absent, or virtual, Mrs. Jaeger will catch-up with you. This is a MANDATORY survey and you cannot walk at graduation without filling this out, whether you are attending a college or not.

  1. Log into Naviance via Clever
  2. Go to About Me in the top right corner
  3. From the drop-down menu, click on Surveys from Your School
  4. Click on Senior EXIT Survey

 

Northern Virginia Community College

Seniors who are planning to apply and attend Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in the Fall of 2022 or Spring of 2023, please reference this Canvas link for your next steps. These steps include how to apply, placement, tuition, holds on your account, and registering for classes. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Jaeger or our NOVA Rep, Chandra Myers.

 

Decision Day

Seniors, Congrats on your Decision Day! We hope all that came out had a BLAST! A video is soon to come of all the photos from that day. If you have not created your hexagon (either you did not attend Decision Day or did not make a decision yet), please see Mrs. Jaeger after school next week before 3:00pm to create your hexagon for the Class of 2022 Hive! College, career, military, gap year, whatever your choice may be, you are part of the hive and want to celebrate YOU!

 

2022-2023 Course Requests

Student course requests for the 2022-2023 academic school year can be viewed in both StudentVue and ParentVue under the Course Request tab on Tuesday, May 10th. An internet browser or an app can be used to access the information. Please review your student's course requests and contact your student's school counselor by email no later than Tuesday, May 31st if any adjustments are needed. As a reminder, the deadline to request any changes to your course requests for the upcoming school year is Tuesday, May 31st. Due to budgetary changes, course requests may change over the summer, and counselors will use your alternate requests if a course must be dropped from your schedule.

Prom

We are looking forward to watching our students enjoy music and dancing at Prom on May 21 at Fox Chase Manor. This event is SOLD OUT and we will not be selling any more tickets due to limited venue space!

 

Yearbooks

Our 2021-2022 OP Hi-Jacket yearbooks are selling like hotcakes! Pre-order online until May 27 at yearbookforever.com to pay by credit or debit. Cost is $75 and yearbooks arrive on May 27. After May 27, any remaining stock will be available by cash or check for $75 on a first come, first serve basis. Get yours today so you won't miss out!

We also have older OP Hi-Jacket yearbooks for sale at the discounted price of $50 per book while supplies last. These books must be bought in-person at OP by cash or check (no credit card sales, sorry!) with checks made payable to "Osbourn Park HS". Currently we have books still available from 2020-2021, 2018-2019, 2017-2018, 2016-2017, and 2015-2016. All other years are sold out.

 

News from the library

Sandra Okyere won the Elizabeth Bowen Library Scholarship, which is for students who are dedicated to 2 or 4 year colleges and to serving others. Sandra will be going to George Mason University and hopes to one day establish several non-profit organizations worldwide that improve the quality of life for impoverished children. This scholarship was extended to all Prince William County, Manassas City, and Manassas Park seniors in memory of Elizabeth Bowen, a beloved librarian of 17 years in Prince William County who was known for her passion of service and contributions. Congratulations, Sandra! Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Lawlor, and Mrs. Grimsley are so proud of you!

Summer World Language Program

This summer the World Language program is offering a free week-long creative writing workshop for native speakers of Spanish.

Hablantes de herencia hispana: nos gustaría invitarles a considerar una de las actividades de enriquecimiento durante el verano. Se trata de un taller de escritura creativa. En este taller, los estudiantes podrán poner en práctica su creatividad en la escritura en español a la vez que aprenden distintos géneros literarios. Al final del taller, se publicarán los trabajos en una revista digital. Este taller se llevará a cabo del 18 al 22 de julio, de 7:30 a 2:20 y es completamente gratuito: incluye el transporte desde su escuela base, desayuno y almuerzo, además de materiales escolares y recursos didácticos. NASA's VESSS program

Andrew Berk and Zachary Durick participated in NASA's VESSS program this past year. They were selected out of 60 students statewide to be invited to the summer academy program at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. Please congratulate them on this prestigious honor!

 

Nutrition & Wellness classes

Last week Sergeant First Class Kevin Melton came to Mrs. Mullins Nutrition & Wellness classes and did the National Guard MRE (meals-ready-to-eat) Chopped Challenge with them! Each kitchen group got 3 MREs to utilize, combine, & create an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. They also had access to the pantry and refrigerator ingredients. Other teachers came to judge the dishes as well as Sfc-Melton and Mrs. Mullins. All teachers and staff were thoroughly impressed with the skill and creativity shown by the students in this challenge! Next year Sfc-Melton will be back and they can't wait!

 

Early Online College

The Student Learning Department and Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) are pleased to announce the Early Online College opportunity for Prince William County Public Schools RISING juniors and seniors. Students will be able to take up to two college courses online each semester. Courses offered will not conflict with Dual Enrollment courses offered at high schools. Tuition for these courses will be paid for by PWCS and NOVA. There will be an online information session on May 9 at 6 p.m. for parents and students interested in this opportunity. Register in advance for the online information session. Additional information about Early Online College can be found on the Advanced Academics website. Applications for students interested in registering for these courses are due July 15. If you have questions, please email Karima Wesselhoft, supervisor of advanced academics and specialty programs.
