VHSL Robotics News

On Monday, May 23rd Osbourn Park High School's FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team - The Metal Jackets (MJs) - won Trophy Class at the VHSL Robotics State Championship Showcase. Trophy Class is a 1st place win, and this is the inaugural year of robotics falling under VHSL (Virginia High School League in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The keynote speaker was OP and Metal Jacket alumni, Jack Palmer, who celebrated all the team successes and shared how the attributes of being in robotics continuous to help him succeed.

The MJs student entry was judged on a 23-page written submission and a 3-minute video about the team. The submission criterion included writing prompts, graphs, and charts to showcase the teams background & introduction, the mechanical and design of robot construction, the software and programming, project management, workplace readiness & responsible citizenship (volunteerism), and the team's competition & performance achievement.

This story did not start with the team submitting for the VHSL recognition, this comes full circle as this is the team that spoke to other teams at tournaments and who realized that robotics across the commonwealth were not recognized with letters and graduation cords as their school recognized them. With the support of two VA House of Delegates (Danica Roem and Hala Ayala), team members traveled to Charlottesville to speak to the board of VHSL and to Richmond to the House of Delegates to share why robotics should be considered. And thru the teams' efforts, it was passed and now all high school robotics teams across the state have the same opportunities as they do at Osbourn Park High School.

This win is bigger than PWCS and the Metal Jackets winning something that they fought hard for. But was a win for all Virginia robotics students - past and present - who feel this is their sport.

For more information about the Metal Jackets, visit their website or watch their submission video to learn more about what is a Jacket.
