2023- 2024 Academic Advising

We are in the process of preparing for the academic advisement process for the 2022-23 school year. School counselors will begin meeting with students during the month of February and March to review their graduation requirements, prior course history, educate students about the course selection process and assist with their course selection for the upcoming year.

Our faculty carefully considers student course recommendations prior to our students selecting courses. By January 24th, teachers will have made student course recommendations for parents/students to view in StudentVue. These recommendations are important because they serve as a guide in the course selection process. After viewing teacher recommendations, parents and/or students may enter their own course selections for the upcoming school year. Instructions on how students and parents can select their courses through the online recommendation process will be provided later. Listed below is the timeline for the academic advising process for the 2023-24 school year:

  • January 11 – 24 Teachers input course recommendations.
  • January 25- 31 Parents and students review teacher recommendations through StudentVue and submit course selections.
  • January 24 – 27 Ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students will review a PowerPoint on the academic advising process through English classes.
  • February 1 – 14 Counselors will begin meeting with 11th grade students through English classes to select their courses for the upcoming school year.
  • February 15 – March 2 Counselors will begin meeting with 10th grade students through English classes to select their courses for the upcoming school year.
  • March 3 - 18 Counselors will begin meeting with 9th grade students through English classes to select their courses for the upcoming school year.
  • May 31, 2023 The last day that parents/students may submit changes to course requests. Requests for change will be honored on a space available basis.

5 Tips for Successful Time Management

Skill #1: Prepare in Advance

First, prepare your work and “TO DO” list for the following day, evening or night before. The best exercise is for you to plan your entire next day as the last thing you do before stopping work for the evening.

Skill #2: Schedule Your Time

Scheduling your time reduces stress and releases energy. The very act of using your organizational skills to plan your day, week, and month, gives you a greater feeling of control and will help increase productivity throughout your day.

Skill #3: Start Early

To increase productivity, start your day early. The more time you take to sit, think, and plan, the better organized you will be in every area of your life.

Skill 4: Fine-Tune Your Organizational Skills

Resolve to improve your organizational skills and use a filing system both at home and at school. As much as 30 percent of working time today is spent looking for misplaced items.

Skill #5: Increase Productivity with Prime Time

Organize your life so that you are doing creative work during your internal ‘‘prime time.’’ Your internal prime time is the time of day, according to your body clock, when you are the most alert and productive. For most people, this is in the morning. For some people, however, it is in the evening.

Week of January 15, 2023

It’s hard to believe that the first semester is almost over, but Friday, January 27, 2023, is the end of the second quarter/first semester. What does that mean? It means half of the school year is over! It also means that our students need to stay diligent with their studies so they may end the year successfully.

In other news, Monday, January 16, 2023, is the celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and PWCS will be closed for all on that day. Dr. King once stated, “Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve.” Sharing this quote with our students is one way to continue his wonderful teachings about giving back to society.

PTSO News

A huge thank you to the parents who attended the PTSO meeting on Thursday, January 12th. At this meeting, the following parents stepped up and accepted the following leadership roles for this wonderful organization.

  • Rehana Shrestha – Vice President
  • Alisha Jones and Rita Nyarko – Co-Treasurers
  • Alisha Jones – All Night Grad
  • Mike Barrett – Membership support

We still need someone to lead the Membership and Fundraising Committees. It is a new year and we need help. Please reach out to the PTSO President Alyssa Rivera at [email protected] and/or Secretary, Antoinette Meekins at [email protected] to volunteer. Volunteering is the only way to have a viable and consistent organization and although I know we are all quite busy, there is strength in numbers.

The next PTSO Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 6 pm.

Academic Advising

It's time to start thinking about academic advising for the 2023-24 school year. Course selection is an important part of our students’ plan for their future. We understand that this is a stressful time for students, so please feel free to contact your students’ counselors with any questions.

In February and March, school counselors will meet with students to review graduation requirements, explore academic and career interests, and assist students in selecting courses for the following school year. Our faculty carefully considers student course recommendations prior to our students selecting courses. By January 24, 2023 teachers will have made student course recommendations for parents/students to view in StudentVUE. These recommendations are important because they serve as a guide in the course selection process. After viewing teacher recommendations, parents and/or student may enter their own course selections for the upcoming school year.

Please take some time to look at the course offerings and opportunities we offer and remember that a well-balanced selection of courses is always a great choice. The timeline below contains significant dates that you should be aware of to prepare for academic advising. Due to weather closures, these dates may vary.

If you would like to read more information on courses offered at OP, students can refer to the Academic Advising module in Canvas:

https://pwcs.instructure.com/courses/77343/modules#module_115349

Timeline

  • January 12-24: Teachers will begin meeting with students to discuss course offerings and provide recommendations for which courses students should take for the upcoming school year.
  • January 24-27: All 9th, 10th, and 11th graders will be shown the academic advising power point by English teachers in English classes.
  • January 25-31: Students and parents will be able to view teacher recommendations and enter their course selections through StudentVUE. The Course Request page in StudentVUE allows students to review or modify course requests. Parents will be able to view requests in ParentVUE.
  • February 1-14: School counselors will meet with 11th grade students through English classes to discuss, review, and select their classes.
  • February 15-March 2: School counselors will meet with 10th grade students through English classes to discuss, review, and select their classes.
  • March 3-17: School counselors will meet with 9th grade students through English classes to discuss, review, and select their classes.

Elective Fair

We will have an Elective Fair on Tuesday, January 31st and Wednesday, February 1st during all lunches. Students are welcome to come and ask any questions they may have regarding classes from teachers and students in each subject area. The purpose of the fair is to provide information to the students so they may make informed decisions that will benefit them and incorporate their interests into the classroom when selecting their classes for the upcoming academic year.

College & Career Center Updates

Yellow Jackets, please make sure you check the OPHS Counseling Canvas page for opportunities available to you. There are scholarships for all grade levels put into the announcements and the Canvas calendar.

Please review and read your monthly newsletters!!!

Class of 2023, please read below important information on scholarships and your mid-year transcripts.

  • Scholarship season is upon us, and you will soon be shared the PWCS Scholarship Survey. This survey is shared out to Seniors each year to self-report scholarship offers and an opportunity to be honored at the Senior Awards Ceremony towards the end of the year. This year's ceremony will be May 31st, 2023 by invitation only. The survey will be shared by the College & Career Counselor in the coming weeks. As you begin to receive your college application decisions, your award letters will show scholarship amounts. Please make sure you take a screenshot of the scholarships you are being offered by each school, or other scholarship outlets (i.e.. scholarships.com, local scholarships, community scholarships, etc.) as you will need this information for the PWCS Scholarship Survey. This is needed to verify the amount by the College & Career Counselor, as well as PWCS. Please also note, the scholarship amount will not be shared publicly and will be kept confidential. This survey will also give you the option of whether you wish to be recognized at our Senior Awards Ceremony and how we will know whether to send you an invitation or not.

Congratulations! You've made it halfway through your senior year! The Counseling Department is preparing to send mid-year transcripts, which show your semester grades, to colleges and universities (not the individual marking periods). The transcripts will be sent to colleges during the 3rd week in February for all PWCS Seniors. These are sent to every college or university for which you have previously requested a transcript. Reach out to your counselor if you have any extenuating circumstances impacting your grades that you'd like addressed in your mid-year transcript packet, or if you have any questions about your transcript requests. If there are any changes or updates to the timeline of sending transcripts, the information will be communicated.

Your cap and gown unit includes the tassel you will wear for your graduation ceremony and is all that is required for graduation. Activity Bus Reminders

As a reminder, students are NOT allowed to leave campus, for any reason, and then return to the building to ride the activity bus home. Any student returning after leaving campus will have to call for a ride home and will NOT be allowed on the Activity Bus. The activity buses are for students who stay after for academic assistance from teachers or for clubs or sports practices. Students who are not attending one of these activities need to take the bus home immediately after school.

Academic Advising Help Sessions

The School Counseling Department will hold Academic Help Sessions during lunches on February 14th, February 17th, March 6th, and March 13th. The sessions will provide student an opportunity to ask questions about the academic advising process, obtain a deeper explanation about classes offered, graduation or specialty program requirement, or address any questions the student may have. This time is NOT geared towards meeting one-on-one with your counselor or creating your course requests earlier than the time when counselors are scheduled to meet with students through English classes. During your lunch block, it will be "Brown Bag Lunch" style, where you will bring your lunch to school that day or bring a disposable tray from the cafeteria and eat lunch in the Career Center during your 25-minute lunch block if you would like to attend. You may not skip class or come to the Career Center during class time. You may only come during your lunch block. If you have any questions, please reach out to your alpha counselor.

Kindness Month

February will kick off Kindness Month, and we want everyone involved in this powerful movement. Students, school staff, and families will have opportunities in February to impact our community for the better and make kindness, empathy, inclusion, and acceptance commonplace. Look for kindness themed bulletin boards in school. Students listen out for morning and afternoon announcements that would provide insight and opportunities for you to do good deeds. Parents, please read our February Newsletter to discover ways you can implement and install kindness with your students at home to help impact our community. Intentional Acts of Kindness is February 13th-17th. Look out for special events throughout the week. Kindness is cool and there are lots of easy ways to spread good vibes!
